Created and developed by the NCS, Circus at School is an introductory circus arts program for elementary school children aged 6 to 12.

With an inclusive, non-competitive approach, the program’s activities are accessible to all children, regardless of their physical, intellectual or social abilities.

The program has three main objectives:

  • Introduce as many Canadians as possible to circus arts
  • Promote the integration of circus arts into physical education and sports classes
  • Enable school-age children to develop motor skills, physical literacy and healthy lifestyle habits.
Program Components
  • The discovery approach: thematic days in schools with introductory circus arts workshops for all.
  • The immersion approach: a comprehensive, 6-week support program for physical education and sports teachers to integrate circus arts in the school curriculum*.
  • NCS student performances for schools participating in the discovery approach.
  • Loan of a circus reading tent (books and cultural material on circus arts).
  • A preferential offer to attend the NCS’s end-of-year performances.
  • The purchase of circus equipment by the National Circus School Foundation for the immersion approach.

* During the first year, 2 types of discipline are offered to partner schools as part of the immersion approach: manipulation and balance.
More disciplines could be considered, under certain conditions.

Our Values

Innovation

Circus at School is a program created and developed by the National Circus School in collaboration with HUPR (its Human Potential Research Center).

The program is based on extensive research conducted with elementary schools in Winnipeg, MA, where circus arts have been implemented in physical education and sports classes for 10,000 children.
These studies have demonstrated numerous correlations between the practice of circus arts among children aged 6 to 12 and the development of creativity, resilience, self-confidence, components of physical literacy and even school perseverance.

Inclusion

Circus arts have major advantages over other sports: they are non-gender-specific and non-competitive. All disciplines are accessible to all, including people with learning and/or social difficulties, and non-Francophones.

Creativity and Curiosity

At the crossroads of sport and the arts, Circus at School gives children the chance to express their creativity and develop their artistic curiosity through a series of circus movements.

Self-Improvement

Thanks to circus arts initiation, children have the opportunity to discover new skills, gain self-confidence and surpass themselves, always in a fun way.

Relevance

Our educational content is developed by circus arts professionals and regularly updated to offer quality initiations in elementary school.

We develop evolving educational content to support elementary schools over the long term.

A Turnkey Program

In order to facilitate the integration of the Circus at School program in our partner schools, we aim to offer comprehensive support that is tailored (as much as possible) to the issues at stake in each school environment.

Team Spirit

We aim to establish a proactive collaboration with our partner schools. We are looking for truly committed teaching teams, motivated by the impact and objectives of the project.

Kindness

Our instructors are all trained to introduce circus arts to children with kindness and respect.
